Winchell expresses good wishes to a fan
Autograph Note signed: "To George/Good wishes/Walter
Winchell", 1p. 4¼x3½, in blue ink. The "father of the newspaper gossip
column", which he pioneered in the 1920s, Walter Winchell (1897-1972)
created such phrases as "scram", "pushover" and "belly laughs". He also was a
familiar voice on radio from 1929 through the mid-1950s, punctuating his
staccato delivery with the sound of teletype keys. Winchell later narrated
the television series, The Untouchables (1959-1963). Paper and
adhesive residue (previous mounting) on verso-light show through at edges.
