Walter Winchell signs check payable to cash
Check signed: "Walter Winchell", 8¼x3¼. New York City, 1938
April 18. Check No. 5205, drawn on his account at the Irving Trust Company,
New York City, payable to Cash for $200. Stamped endorsements on verso. The
"father of the newspaper gossip column", which he pioneered in the 1920s,
Walter Winchell (1897-1972) created such phrases as "scram", "pushover" and
"belly laughs". He also was a familiar voice on radio from 1929 through
the mid-1950s, punctuating his staccato delivery with the sound of teletype
keys. Winchell later narrated the television series, The
Untouchables (1959-1963). Lightly creased with folds, light vertical fold at
the "W" in Winchell. Bank cancellations and stamps, stamp on front just nicks
the upper loop of the "t" in Walter. Slightly soiled, pencil notes (unknown
hand) at lower blank areas. Overall, fine condition.
