WALTER WINCHELL
The famed entertainment reporter signs a check for $200 in
cash.
Check signed: "Walter Winchell", 8¼x3¼. New York, N. Y.,
1938 July 22. Check #5409, drawn on his account at the Irving Trust Company,
payable to cash for $200. The "father of the newspaper gossip column",
which he pioneered in the 1920s, Walter Winchell (1897-1972)
created such phrases as "scram", "pushover" and "belly laughs". He also was a
familiar voice on radio from 1929 through the mid-1950s, punctuating his
staccato delivery with the sound of teletype keys. Winchell later narrated
the television series, The Untouchables (1959-1963). A check for $200
in 1938 equates to over $3,300 today, a rather large cash withdrawal!
