Winchell writes to a sick friend indicating he will be sending his
columns to him
Typed Letter signed: "Walter Winchell". 1p. 8½x11, New
York, New York, 1934 November 13 on Daily Mirror letterhead. In full:
"Dear Neil: The news of your illness made me feel very badly. Is there
anything I can do? Please take care of yourself and follow the doctor's orders.
I am having the column mailed you every day to this address. When you have a
definite place in the West, let me know and I'll see that it goes out to you air
mail. kindest regards" The "father of the newspaper gossip column",
which he pioneered in the 1920s, Walter Winchell (1897-1972) created such
phrases as "scram", "pushover" and "belly laughs". He also was a familiar
voice on radio from 1929 through the mid-1950s, punctuating his staccato
delivery with the sound of teletype keys. Winchell later narrated the
television series, The Untouchables (1959-1963). Normal mailing
folds. Lightly creased and toned unevenly. Otherwise, fine
condition.
