WALTER WINCHELL
Winchell writes to a friend regarding taking a leave of absence from
his daily column & show
Typed Letter signed: "Walter ". 1p. 8½ x7, Beverly Hills,
California, 1937 September 21 on Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation
letterhead. In full: "Dear Neil: Thanks for your letter of the 17th. It's always nice to hear from you, and I appreciate the news
you always have for me. As you probably know by now, I have asked for a leave of
ab-sence from my column and radio work until sometime in Novem-ber. After
working eight to ten hours on the set, Neil, I just hadn't the strength to sit down and pound out a column and radio
program. I was headed for a nervous breakdown. I intend to resume, as I said
above, about November 15, so don't forget me. And when
you're in Hollywood, I wish you would give me a ring.
Best regards. Sincerely," In 1937, Winchell stared as himself in the film
Love and Hisses. The "father of the newspaper gossip column",
which he pioneered in the 1920s, Walter Winchell (1897-1972) created such
phrases as "scram", "pushover" and "belly laughs". He also was a familiar
voice on radio from 1929 through the mid-1950s, punctuating his staccato
delivery with the sound of teletype keys. Winchell later narrated the
television series, The Untouchables (1959-1963). Normal mailing
folds. Toned and creased. Stained at lower section.
