Winchell writes a brief note to a friend
Typed Letter signed: "Winchell", in pencil. 1p. 8½x11, no
location or date. In full: "Dear Neil: What's
the matter? Havent heard from you in too long and miss your help. I hope your
healthy is good. Sincerely, [signature] If you can shoot me a
night press rate collect by Saturday please do so? " The "father of the
newspaper gossip column", which he pioneered in the 1920s, Walter
Winchell (1897-1972) created such phrases as "scram", "pushover" and "belly
laughs". He also was a familiar voice on radio from 1929 through the
mid-1950s, punctuating his staccato delivery with the sound of teletype keys.
Winchell later narrated the television series, The Untouchables
(1959-1963). Three horizontal fold creases. Left edge shipped. ½x1 tear at right
center edge. Creased and toned.
