Sale Price $306.00
The creator of Woody Woodpecker signs a first day cover honoring Saw Whet Owl Aegoluis acadia.
First Day Cover signed: "Walter Lantz", 6½x3¾. First Day Cover picturing the Saw Whet Owl, 15-cent stamp in the Wildlife Conservation series affixed, postmarked Fairbanks, Alaska, August 26, 1978, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Above the postmark, Lantz has drawn Woody Woodpecker, the legendary cartoon character that he created in 1940. Woody was inspired by an obnoxious woodpecker that attacked the cottage in which Lantz and his wife Gracie were honeymooning. Mel Blanc first introduced Woody's unforgettable laugh; beginning in 1950, Gracie (who had secretly auditioned) took over. In 1979, four years after the last Woody cartoon was produced, Lantz was awarded a special Academy Award for "bringing joy and laughter to every part of the world". Fine condition.
