The creator of Woody Woodpecker signs a first day cover honoring the Blue Jay.

First Day Cover honoring the Blue Jay, 13-cent stamp representing the Blue Jay and 2-centFreedom to Speak Out-A Root of Democracy stamp affixed, postmarked Capex Station, Toronto, Canada, June 10, 1978, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Below the postmark, Lantz has drawn Woody Woodpecker, the legendary cartoon character that he created in 1940. Woody was inspired by an obnoxious woodpecker that attacked the cottage in which Lantz and his wife Gracie were honeymooning. Mel Blanc first introduced Woody's unforgettable laugh; beginning in 1950, Gracie (who had secretly auditioned) took over. In 1979, four years after the last Woody cartoon was produced, Lantz was awarded a special Academy Award for "bringing joy and laughter to every part of the world". Fine condition.
