WALTER LANTZ
Inscribed and signed pen and ink drawing of Woody Woodpecker, framed in the Gallery of History style to 9½x14.
Original Art inscribed and signed: "To/Earl Collins/Walter Lantz", 3½x5¼. Original pen and ink drawing of Lantz' creation, Woody Woodpecker.Walter Lantz (1900-1994) created Woody Woodpecker, who became his most popular character, in 1940, after a woodpecker attacked the roof of the cottage in which he and his wife, Gracie, were honeymooning. Woody's famous "Henh-Henh-Henh-HENNNH-Henh" laugh was provided by Mel Blanc until 1950, when Gracie, who had auditioned anonymously, took over. Lantz, who had been working in film animation from age 16, took over Universal Film's animation department in 1926. In 1935, the organization separated from Universal and became Walter Lantz Studios. Lantz was already producing popular movie cartoons, including Oswald Rabbit and Andy Panda, before introducing Woody in an Andy Panda cartoon. Lantz produced Woody shorts - never a feature film - until 1975. In 1979, he received a special Academy Award for "bringing joy and laughter to every part of the world." Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 9½x14.
