WALTER L. GEORGE. ALS: "WL George", 1p, 8x10. 2 Hyde Park Terrace, W., 1923 September 20. On imprinted sheet to "My dear Waugh". In full: "Until now I have always had good shows, but you may care to know that so far neither Ritchards, Sotheran, the Times, nor Smith of Kensington High Street (who matters) has 'One of the Guilty' in their window. My former novels were shown with the face displayed. Perhaps it is the dashing cover, but this might be handled of the town liaveller. Yrs sincerely". Ink note (unknown hand) at lower margin: "A.A.T./Please see me about/this." George published One of the Guilty in the year he wrote this note. Waugh was probably British publisher and literary critic ARTHUR WAUGH (1866-1943), the father of author Evelyn Waugh (1903-1966), whose most famous work was Brideshead Revisited (1945), and grandfather of British writer and journalist Auberon Waugh (1939-2001). British writer WALTER LIONEL GEORGE (1882-1926), who was born and brought up in Paris, was best known for his novels, including A Bed of Roses (1911), The Making of an Englishman (1917), The Triumph of Gallio (1924) and Gift of Sheba (1926), and such writings on feminism as Woman and Tomorrow (1913), The Intelligence of Woman (1916) and The Story of Woman (1925). George also wrote a number of non-fiction works, beginning with Engines of Social Progress (1907) and France in the Twentieth Century (1908), as well as short stories, some of which were published posthumously as The Selected Short Stories of W.L. George (1927). Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Lightly browned at edges. Lower portion of imprinted address has been crossed out in ink. Overall, fine condition.
