Bare-chest 4x5¾ image of "the Blonde Tiger", Germany's heavyweight champ during World War II.
Photograph signed: "With my best wishes/Walter Neusel/Windson 14.6/35". Sepia, 4x5¾. Walter Neusel (1905-1964) fought some of the greatest boxers of his era, defeating Tommy Loughran but losing to Max Schmeling and Primo Carnero. (He beat Schmeling in an exhibition match in 1948, when both fighters were past their primes.) Neusel, called "the Blonde Tiger", held the German heavyweight title intermittently from November 1938 to September 1942, when boxing was suspended for the war's duration. In a long pro career of two decades (1931-1950), he compiled a record of 68-13-9, scoring 36 knockouts while suffering six. Neusel died in his Berlin restaurant just days before his son Peter won a bronze in rowing at the Tokyo Olympics. Corners lightly worn. Tape on edges of verso. Image silvered. Ink lightly faded, but legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
