Hess handwrote, signed and dated this letter, written on a personalized card,
less than a month before receiving the 1949 Nobel Prize in Physiology or
Medicine. In it, he thanks a colleague for his congratulations and lists the
difficulties of being a researcher.
Autograph letter signed: "W. R. Hess", 2 pages, 5¼x4, (1 sheet front
and verso), on personalized card. 1949 November 24. In German,
translated. In full: "Dear colleague Meyerhof! For your kind
congratulations quite heartfelt thanks. You also know the localities where my
works were created at least in part. The roof burnt down once meanwhile so that
I have the opportunity to add on a story. But also I am hard pressed for space
and money. Luckily I had an effective backup through the Rockefeller Foundation.
Whenever possible also to meet again the next summer. With best greetings,". Walter R. Hess (1881-1973) was a
Swiss physiologist at the University of Zurich. He was co-winner of the 1949
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discovery of the functional
organization of the interbrain as a coordinator of the activities of the
