WALTER SAVAGE LANDOR
Extremely rare signature from the hot-headed English author of
Imaginary Conversations, dated two years before his death
Signature: "Walter Savage Landor/January 28 62", in ink,
6½x1¾. A troubled man in both temper and contempt for authority, Walter
Savage Landor (1774-1864) was a critically praised author whose work was
often overshadowed by his behavior. Many of Landor's finer works were written
either anonymously or in Latin and were most often highly praised by
scholars. However, his favoring of Latin would also earn him criticism, as
he would often use the language to write scathing reviews or poetry in protest
of political and authority figures that would, not realizing that many were
still able to read the language. Most publicly popular of his writings were
his volumes of Imaginary Conversations, which would pair up
great historical figures like Queen Elizabeth and Cecil, Henry VIII and Anne
Boleyn, and Leofric and Godiva in conversations completely written by Landor
in how he figured the figures would naturally carry themselves in
conversation. His grandson, Arnold Henry Savage Landor, became a well-known
artist and explorer. Light surface creases. Lightly toned. Corners and edges
slightly worn. Irregularly cut. Small sections of tape on verso, no show
through. Otherwise, fine condition.
