The businessman/philanthropist signs a typed 1923 letter donating items once owned by George Washington.
Typed Letter signed: "Walter Scott", 1 page, 6¼x10¼. New York, N.Y., 1923 January 9. On personal letterhead to Amelia Day Campbell, National Chairman, Women's Committee, Sulgrave Institution, New York City. In full: "Inasmuch as it was through your instrumentality that I met Mr. William Lanier Washington, from whom I was able to secure several relics of the 'Father of our Country', I have much pleasure in tendering through you and your Ccommittee to Sulgrave Manor, Sulgrave, England, two of those relics, namely, George Washington's Saddle Bags and Liquor Chest, which are packed and ready for shipment upon notification of your acceptance. As to the authenticity of the above, I enclose the sworn statements of Mr. William Lanier Washington. [Items not included.] These articles are accompanied by my best wishes, not only for the success of the Sulgrave Manor Association on the other side, but for the Sulgrave Institution of the United States. With kind regards to your Committee, and thanking you for what you did to make this possible, yours sincerely". Walter Scott (1861-1935) moved with his parents from Montreal to Boston in 1864. At age 10, Scott was managing a small fruit store near Harvard University. At age 15, he joined the wholesale firm of Butler Brothers, rising to manage its New York office from 1889 to 1932. He made headlines during World War I for refusing a shipment of German toys purchased before the US joined the war and writing off the loss. Skills. He endowed several college scholarships and hospital programs, as well as bravery medals for several police forces. The New York Police named him an Honorary Commissioner. The Sulgrave Institution was an association of British, US and Canadian citizens promoting friendly relations among the three nations. Also the Institution no longer exists, one of its branches, the Sulgrave Manor Board, continues to manage Sulgrave Manor, the Washington family's ancestral home in England.
