WALTER W. HELLER
Signed transcript of his appearance on Meet the Press in
1976
Pamphlet signed: "Walter W. Heller", 6½x8½, 9 pages. Printed
transcript from an appearance by Heller on NBC-TV's Meet the Press, April
11, 1976, signed on the front cover. Walter Wolfgang Heller (1915-1987)
chaired President Kennedy's Council of Economic Advisers. He was the
chief architect of JFK's cut in marginal tax rates, credited with
boosting the economy. Although Heller was a Keynesian and a Democrat, the
success of this tax cut was cited in later years as a precedent by Republican
Presidents. The day after Kennedy's assassination, Heller met in the Oval
Office with President Johnson and proposed the idea of a "War on Poverty,"
which Johnson enthusiastically embraced. He resigned, however, when Johnson
escalated the Vietnam War without raising taxes to pay for it, correctly
predicting that inflation would result. After leaving government, Heller
returned to the University of Minnesota, attracting several top scholars to the
school's Economics Department. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine
condition.
