WALTER WELLMAN
Journalist and explorer Walter Wellman wrote this letter on his personalized letterhead at the American Press Association in 1892, one year before his first expedition to the North Pole, asking the recipient to help someone at the United Press.
Autograph letter signed "Walter Wellman" as Correspondent. With lead pencil notations in upper left corner in unknown hand and date stamp in purple ink. 1 page, 8¼x10½, on letterhead of the Washington Bureau of the American Press Association. March 10, 1892. Addressed to I. D. Marshall, New York. In full: "Dear Mr. Marshall: Enclosed you will find a request from Mr. DeGrau of the United Press. If you can furnish him what he wants I shall be glad to have it done. Sincerely yours". Wellman (1858-1934, born in Mentor, Ohio) was a journalist, explorer and early aviation pioneer. He carried out five expeditions to the North Pole, three of them attempted flights in dirigibles (two in 1907, one in 1909). He also tried to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in an airship in 1910. This attempt was a failure, but it did break existing world records for time and distance sailing by airship: 1,008 miles in 72 hours. Lightly toned, foxed and creased. Date stamp touches handwriting but not signature. Upper left corner is missing. Tackhead-sized hole in upper left corner. Paper loss on verso. Folded once horizontally and twice vertically. Otherwise in fine condition.
