WANDA JACKSON
Large 17x11 publicity photograph warning, "Look Out!" with the big haired Wanda Jackson, shown wielding a pistol. "This gun don't care who it shoots!"
Photograph signed: "Wanda/Jackson," in blue felt tip. B/w, 17x11. Publicity photograph for Capitol Records, captioned at lower margin. Wanda Jackson (born in 1937), who became known as the "First Lady of Rock-A-Billy", was one of America's first major female country and rockabilly singers. Jackson, who recorded several songs with the Brazos Valley Boys, was still in high school when she began recording on the Decca label (1954-1955). Before moving to Capitol in 1956, she toured on a bill with Elvis Presley, who became a good friend and, along with her father, encouraged her to sing rockabilly. With Capitol until 1973, Jackson recorded both country and rockabilly songs, usually cutting records with one style on each side. Nominated twice for Grammy Awards, Jackson was a popular stage performer in the U.S. and worldwide (she was a big attraction in Las Vegas from the mid-1950s into the 1970s). In 1971, Jackson and her husband, Wendell Goodman, who managed his wife's career, became Christians and Jackson released one gospel album, Praise the Lord, on Capitol in 1972. Jackson did three more gospel albums on the Myrrh label before switching to Word Records in 1977. Today, Jackson continues to tour and records on Amethyst Records, based in Oklahoma City.
