Collection: 1) Typed Letter signed: "WGM", as U.S. Senator, 1 page, 8x10½. Washington, D.C., 1945 July 30. On United States Senate Committee on Naval Affairs letterhead addressed to Mr. Ralph Errington Ward, Washington, D.C. In full: "Dear Mr. Ward: In reply to your letter of July, 29, 1945, I am indeed glad to send you my autograph to add to your collection" Affixed to an 8½x11 page (2 surfaces). Normal mailing folds. Paperclip indentation located at left below top mailing fold. Slightly creased. Adhesive on verso (affixing card to the page). Otherwise, fine condition. 2) Signature: "Warren G Magnuson", 3¼x2¼ card. Affixed to verso of the 8½x11 page (3 surfaces). Paperclip stain at top left. Slightly creased. Adhesive on verso (affixing card to the page). Otherwise, fine condition. 3) Original United States Senate mailing envelope with Magnuson's ink stamped frank, addressed to Ralph Errington Ward, Washington, D.C., Postmarked Washington, D.C., July 30, 1945. Affixed on verso of the 8½x11 page (3 surfaces). Frayed at top edge. Otherwise, fine condition. Warren G. Magnuson (1905-1989), a Democrat, was first sent to congress by the people of Washington in 1937. After serving as Representative he was elected to the United States Senate as a Democrat from Washington in 1944 and served until 1981, becoming the most senior member of that body. Magnuson was instrumental in keeping supertankers out of the Puget Sound by attaching an amendment to a routine funding reauthorization bill. From the collection Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II. Ward became President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate.
