WARREN WILLIAM
The actor is shown wearing a suit and tie and smoking a cigarette in this 7¼x9¼ black
and white photograph.
Inscribed photograph signed: "To/Stanley Jeffery/in grateful appreciation/sincerely/Warren
William", B/w 7¼x9¼. Warren William (1894-1948, born Warren Krech in Aitkin,
Minnesota) got his acting start on the stage, with 18 performances on Broadway between
1924 and 1931, before jumping to films late in the silent era. William had over 60 film
appearances between 1922 and 1947, often staring as a hardnosed executive or unethical
lawyer. His roles included Julius Caesar in Cecil B. DeMille's Cleopatra (1933); a stuffy
lawyer who falls for Joan Blondell in Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933); the first Perry Mason in
The Case of the Howling Dog (1934); Sam Spade (renamed Ted Shayne) in Satan Met a
Lady, the first film adaptation of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon; and Louis Joseph
Vance's thief-turned-sleuth Lone Wolf in a number of movies. Slightly worn at edges.
Irregularly cut at edges (affecting inscription). Ink in "Sincerely" lightly smudged. Otherwise,
fine condition.
