Wayne Gretzky, who was known as "The Great One", won theNational Hockey League's Hart Trophy (MVP) a record nine times and the Art Ross Trophy (scoring leader) a record ten times. The Conn Smythe Trophy (playoffs' MVP) was won by Gretzky in 1985 and 1988; no player has won it more than twice. Gretzky, who made his debut in the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers on October 10, 1979, played for the Los Angeles Kings (1988-1996), the St. Louis Blues (1996) and the New York Rangers (1996-1999). When he retired after the 1999 season, the National Hockey League retired Gretzky's number; no NHL team will ever assign #99 to another player. The NHL Hall of Fame suspended the mandatory waiting period and Gretzky was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 22, 1999, just seven months after his retirement. Fine condition.
