WAYNE GRETZKY and GORDIE HOWELimited edition commemorative plate honoring Gretzky, signed by him and by the man whose all-time NHL scoring record he broke in 1989. Ephemera signed: "Wayne Gretzky", "Gordie Howe" in gold ink. Signed on top surface of a limited edition, 10"-diameter Gartlan commemorative plate honoring Gretzky. (1,851 were made, the number with which Gretzky broke Gordie Howe's NHL scoring record). Original artwork by Michael J. Taylor, approved by Gretzky and by the Los Angeles Kings. WAYNEGRETZKY won theNational Hockey League's Hart Trophy (MVP) a record nine times and the Art Ross Trophy (scoring leader) a record ten times. The Conn Smythe Trophy (playoffs' MVP) was won by Gretzky in 1985 and 1988; no player has won it more than twice. When he retired after the 1999 season, the National Hockey League retired his number 99. No NHL team will ever assign #99 to another player. The NHL Hall of Fame suspended the mandatory waiting period for Gretzky's enshrinement. Fellow Canadian GORDIE HOWE (1928-2016), one of the most prolific scorers in the history of the game, starred with the Detroit Red Wings from 1946-1971. The winner of six NHL scoring titles (1951-1954, 1957, 1963) and six MVP Awards (1952, 1953, 1957, 1958, 1960, 1963), his combined USHL-NHL-WHL records at his retirement in 1980 included 975 goals, 1,383 assists and 2,358 points. He scored at least 20 goals in 27 consecutive seasons. With the Red Wings, Howe won four Stanley Cups (1950, 1952, 1954, and 1955). When Howe, on the NHL Hartford Whalers, retired at the age of 52, he was the oldest player ever to play major league hockey. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972. His legacy lives on with the infamous Gordie Howe hat trick: a goal, an assist, and a fight in a single game. In 2008, Howe was named the first recipient of the NHL Lifetime Achievement Award. On October 15, 1989, Gretzky broke Howe's all-time NHL scoring record! Fine condition.
