Photograph signed: "Wayne L. Hays/U.S. Congress", in blue ink,
B/w 8x10 (actual image 5¾x7¼). Wayne Levere Hays (1911-1989) was a
Representative for Ohio from 1949 to1976. Noted for being especially harsh,
Hays was often considered one of the most powerful members of Congress, with few
fellow members willing to cross him in fear of retaliation. Hays is most
notable for a sex scandal that broke loose in 1976, with his secretary
coming forward saying that was hired with little to no secretarial training, and
was instead hired to act simply as his mistress. Hays denied the allegations of
hiring as his mistress, but did not deny the fact that there was a sexual
relationship between the two. He resigned from Congress in September of 1976.
