A photograph of Handy with his family: his daughter Lucille, grandson Homer, and cousin Blanch
Photograph signed: "W.C. Handy", on verso: "My daughter Lucille/My grandson Homer/My Cousin Blanch Poole/+ myself", Sepia 10x8. W.C. Handy (1873-1958, born William Christopher Handy in Florence, Alabama) was known as the "Father of the Blues", but he didn't invent blues music. He was, however, one of the first to use the term in a song title (Memphis Blues in 1912). He also published "blue notes" in his compositions, which included St. Louis Blues (1914) and Beale Street Blues (1916). Handy, who conducted his own band (1903-1921) before becoming a music publisher in the 1920s, was a popular performer until the mid-1940s, when he retired due to failing eyesight. Corners worn and creased. Light surface creases. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Lightly soiled. Slightly bowed. Light surface scratches (not seen head on). Otherwise, fine condition.
