His inscribed 1942 signature on the cover of sheet music for "Twenty-Third Psalm," published by his company
Sheet music inscribed and signed: "To Mrs. Adele R. Grebel /W. C. Handy 10-17-42", 8 pages, 9¼x10½. Sheet music for "Twenty-Third Psalm," music by Lillian Evanti, published by Handy Bros. Music Co., 1939. Signed on the cover. William Christopher "W.C." Handy (1873-1958) who had formed his own publishing company in 1913 to protect his musical interests, composed and published "St. Louis Blues", one of his most popular tunes, in 1914. The musician, bandleader and composer had earlier written "The Memphis Blues", the first song to use the term "blues" in its title. While recording with his band in New York City from 1917-1923, he founded the Handy Record Company (1922), but it folded before any recordings were issued. Handy spent the remainder of the 1920s and 1930s working with a number of orchestras before retiring from performing due to failing eyesight. His autobiography, Father of the Blues, was published in 1938. Moisture stains dotting cover, front and verso. Verticle crease with surface chips. Corners worn. Trimmed unevenly at top edge.
