WENDY WASSERSTEIN
In a letter praising Kitty Carlisle Hart, from whose estate it was acquired, Wasserstein mentions her Pulitzer Prize. Accompanied by autograph envelope signed by Wasserstein in the return address.
Autograph Letter signed: "Wendy", 6½x4½ card. No place, August 26, circa 1989. On personal note card to Kitty Carlisle Hart. In full: "Just a short note to tell you how much receiving your fan note meant to me. I have always been so impressed with the time and care you've given to the theatre. It's so obvious you are one of those people who will make certain our art form survives. So it was an honor and a delight to hear from you. I'm also glad you came across the Pulitzer Prize piece. It really did feel like I was on The Millionaire!! I mentioned your note to my friend André Bishop and he suggested we all have dinner some time soon. I would just love that. All my very best and please send my regards to Christopher. Accompanied by autograph envelope signed in the return address: "Wasserstein" (6½x4½). This letter is addressed to, and was in the estate of, versatile singer, actress and TV personality Kitty Carlisle (1910-2007), who was still performing a one-woman show as late as 2006. She was married to playwright Moss Hart until his death in 1961. The success of her first work, Any Woman Can't, which was produced off-Broadway in 1973, prompted college student Wendy Wasserstein to continue writing plays. Her first major play, Uncommon Women and Others (1977), was televised by PBS in 1978, bringing her national recognition. Wasserstein's best known play, The Heidi Chronicles (1988), won the 1989 Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award for best play and was adapted for television in 1995. Fine condition. Corners worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
