WERNER DAHM
The former Nazi scientist and Chief NASA Aerodynamicist traced his right hand on 8½x11 light card stock.
Hand Print signed: "Werner Dahm", on 8½x11 light card stock. Werner Karl Dahm (1917-2008) was born in Lindenthal, Germany. When studying aerodynamics in Munich he avoided joining the Nazi student clubs, for this he was denied access to advanced aircraft courses so he focused on rocketry. In 1939 he was drafted into the army and in 1941 he was assigned to the German rocket development effort at Peenemuende, led by Werher von Braun. In 1945 after surrendering to American forces he accepted an invitation as part of Operation Paperclip (which recruited Nazi Scientists for employment by the United States after World War II) to join the U.S. Army's nascent rocket program. Working with the United States he developed the external aerodynamic design for the Army's Redstone missile, which served as the launch rocket for the nation's first live nuclear missile tests and later launched the first U.S. astronaut into space. In 1960 he began working for NASA and became Chief of the Aerophysics division at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center until 1992 when he became Chief Aerodynamicist at the NASA Center. In 1997 he was awarded the AIAA Aerodynamics Award for his exceptional lifetime contributions to the aerodynamic design and analysis of strategic missiles and manned/unmanned launch rockets and in 2003 he received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal. Ink note (unknown hand) on verso. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
