WERNHER VON BRAUN
Wernher von Braun sends a typed letter in German of condolences.
Typed Letter signed: "Wernher von Braun", 1p, 7¼x10½. On personal letterhead. Huntsville, Alabama, 1969 December 7. To Frau Isolde Zborowski, Brunoy, France. In German, translated in full: "Just now I received the notice of the passing away of your admired husband. I was affected deeply to learn of such an early decease and wish to express my sincere and heartfelt sympathy to you and your children. I must tell you that his death will leave a large gap beyond the circle of your family. Your husband belonged to the individuals who, thanks to their creative power of invention and large abundance of ideas, contributed a special amount to the impressive technical enhancements of the last decades. His demise is an irreplaceable loss that all my co-workers, who like me, had the preference to know your husband personally, are mourning deeply with you and your family. With sincere sympathy and my best wishes for you. Yours very obedient." VON BRAUN (1912-1977) developed the V-2 ballistic missile for Nazi Germany used against England in 1944.After coming to the United States in 1945, he led the team that developed the first U.S. satellites in the 1950s andlater developed the Saturn V rocket used in the Apollo moon missions. Von Braun also pioneered the concept of the space shuttle. In 1955, von Braun became a naturalized U.S. citizen. Helmut ZBOROWSKI, whose widow received condolences in this letter, was a fellow German rocket scientist. Slightly soiled in blank margins. Fine condition.
