Autograph Letter signed:"Westland Marston", 1 page, 4½x7. 191 Euston Road N. W. [London], 1887 October 11. To "My very dear friend", in full: "Best thanks for all your most kind activity on my behalf. I do not think however that I shall quit this house till Spring. I shall have great pleasure in meeting Miss Ayrton either with you here or at your own house. God bless and prosper you. Your ever affectionate". Accompanying with this item on an integral leaf: Autograph Letter signed:"Dallas", 2 pages (front and verso), 4½x7. No place, October 11, no year. In full: "You see I don't forget you! When it is decided that part is right for the Narrator please write to him to appoint an emissary to go to him then I will go with you but she is not to be troubled till the Performance is really settled to come off. She has but settled and much to do. Yours affectionately [signature] We expect you today" JOHN WESTLAND MARSTON (1819-1890) was an English playwright, poet and critic. His plays included Strathmore and Marie de Meranie. His poems included "The Patrician's Daughter" and "The Favorite of Fortune". He also wrote literary criticism. Author Eneas Sweetland "E. S." DALLAS (1828-1879), born in Jamaica, to Scottish parents, wrote a column for The Times of London, and in other journals. His Poetics: an Essay on Poetry (1852) was critically praised and influential. He reported from Paris on the Exposition of 1867, and on the siege of the city during the Franco-Prussian War (1870). He wrote on a variety of topics, including gastronomy, under a pseudonym. Dallas was married to actress Isabella Glynn from 1853 to 1874. It is likely one of her performances that Dallas is discussing in his letter. One horizontal fold. Lightly worn. Lightly creased. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
