JOHN WESTLAND MARSTON (1819-1890) was an English playwright, poet and
critic. His plays included Strathmore and Marie de Meranie. His
poems included "The Patrician's Daughter" and "The Favorite of Fortune". He
also wrote literary criticism. Author Eneas Sweetland "E. S." DALLAS
(1828-1879), born in Jamaica, to Scottish parents, wrote a column for The
Times of London, and in other journals. His Poetics: an Essay on
Poetry (1852) was critically praised and influential. He reported from
Paris on the Exposition of 1867, and on the siege of the city during the
Franco-Prussian War (1870). He wrote on a variety of topics, including
gastronomy, under a pseudonym. Dallas was married to actress Isabella Glynn
from 1853 to 1874. It is likely one of her performances that Dallas is
discussing in his letter. One horizontal fold. Lightly worn. Lightly creased.
