WHAT MAKES SAMMY RUN? PLAY CAST
Robert Alda and Sally Ann Howes sign a photo of themselves performing in the play, mounted to 10x13.
Inscribed Photograph signed: "To David, Robert Alda", "Sally Ann Howes". B/w, 8x10, mounted to 10x13. Alda has signed on the mount, Howes on the photo itself. Shown in character from the Broadway musical What Makes Sammy Run? (1964-1965). Alda portrayed "Al Manhaim", Howes was "Kit Sargent". They are shown here with Steve Lawrence, who played the title role of Sammy Glick. ROBERT ALDA (1914-1986) starred as George Gershwin in his first film, (Rhapsody in Blue, 1945), but played villains and character roles most of his career. Alda, who won a Tony Award for creating the role of Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls (1950), is the father of actor Alan Alda, and appeared with his son in two episodes of TV's M*A*S*H. SALLY ANN HOWES (1930-2021), the daughter of British comedian Bobby Howes and the granddaughter of Broadway director J. A. E. Malone, took over the role of Eliza in My Fair Lady from Julie Andrews in 1958. She was nominated for a Tony in Brigadoon, also appearing in the TV version. During their 8-year marriage (1958-1966), composer Richard Adler wrote two Broadway musicals for her (Gift of the Magi, Kwamima). She is recognizable to generations of children as Truly Scrumptious in the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). Howes has sung at the White House for three Presidents (Ike, JFK and LBJ), and performed starred on regional stages in many of the great musicals (Camelot, Sound of Music and The King and I, to name a few). Toned. Worn. Photograph peeling from mount near top. Otherwise, fine condition.
