WHIT CUNLIFFE
3½x5½ image of the English music hall star in formal frock with
boutonniere
Photograph signed: "Yours faithfully/Whit Cunliffe". B/w,
3½x5½. Addressed in his own hand on verso with a Liverpool postmark (October 18,
1918). Whit Cunliffe (1876-1966) was an English music hall star,
who made many early recordings of his generally humorous songs. Cunliffe's
lyrics were often slightly risqué, with a politically conservative bent ("You'll
Get On in England If You're Not an Englishman"). He gave benefit
performances for the war effort in World War I, popularizing songs like "Hoch
Hoch Der Kaiser". Cunliffe was the last surviving member of a group of music
hall stars known as the Lions Comiques. Lightly worn. Light surface scratch
at face. Otherwise, fine condition.
