Whitelaw Reid signs a card in brown ink.
Signature: "Very Respectfully/Whitelaw Reid/New York/7 April, 1886", 4¼x3½ card. Whitelaw Reid (1837-1912), who covered the Civil War as a young journalist, was handpicked by Horace Greeley as his successor to manage and edit the New York Tribune (1872-1905). Reid was the Republican Vice Presidential nominee in 1892, added to the ticket of incumbent Benjamin Harrison for the unsuccessful rematch with Grover Cleveland. Reid spent his final years (1905-1912) as U.S. Ambassador to Britain. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
