Signed envelop commemorating Game 4 of the 1987 World Series
Commemorative Envelope signed: "Whitey Herzog", 6½x3¾. Envelope with color cachet marking Game 4 of the 1987 World Series, postmarked Baseball Station, St Louis, Missouri, October 21, 1987 (the place and date of the game), 22-cent US flag stamp affixed. Herzog's Cardinals won Game 4, as explained here, but lost the Series 4-3 to the Minnesota Twins. Herzog, born Dorrel Norman Elvert Herzog in New Athens, Illinois in 1931, was a Major League outfielder turned manager who led the 1982 St. Louis Cardinals to their first World Series title in 15 years. Herzog was a southpaw that the New York Yankees signed in 1949 as an amateur free agent, but he didn't enter the big leagues until 1956 with the Washington Senators. He ended his Major League playing career in 1963, after playing for four teams, with a career batting average of .257, 414 hits, 25 home runs and 172 RBIs. Herzog's main achievements were as a manager. He was hired by the Texas Rangers in 1973 and spent 19 seasons as a manager, mostly with the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals. Herzog preferred whittling down his opponents with pitching and defense instead of scoring big with home runs. It evidently worked, because he had only five losing seasons and ended his career with a win-loss record of 1,281-1,125, a percentage of .532. He also led the Cardinals to the championship in 1982 and earned them the National League pennant in 1985 and 1987. After leaving the Cardinals in 1990, he held a number of executive positions with the Los Angeles Angels, including a turn as general manager in 1993 and 1994. Lightly creased at bottom edge. Otherwise fine condition.
