Typed Letter signed: "W. J. Funk", 3 pages (integral leaf),
5½x8½. No place, 1921 June 14. To Mr. Whitehurst. Promotional letter
responding to an inquiry about the Rosenthal Language Phone Method, citing
endorsements and examples of institutions using the system of language
instruction. Wilfred John Funk (1883-1965), an American author and
publisher, is best known as the co-editor of Funk & Wagnall's New
Standard Dictionary. His other works include Word Origins and
Six Weeks to Words of Power. Thirty Days to a More Powerful
Vocabulary, co-authored with Norman Lewis in 1942 and never out of print
since, is used in high school English classes. Wilfred Funk was President of
the Funk & Wagnall's Company, founded by his father, from 1925 to
1940. The company marketed an inexpensive encyclopedia which could be
purchased a volume at a time in groceries and other retail stores. The company
was sold to Reader's Digest in 1965. The last Funk & Wagnall's encyclopedia
was issued in 1997. Heavily toned and lightly creased. Horizontal fold through
center. Minor notches at fold. Corners lightly creased. Otherwise, fine
condition.
