Article signed: "Will &" and "Ariel Durant", 1p, 8½x11. Printed essay titled "A Message to McCarthy Democrats from Will and Ariel Durant". Will Durant has signed for both his wife and himself below a facsimile signature signed by each of them. The article urges voters who had supported Senator Eugene McCarthy during the contentious Democratic primaries and convention of 1968 to campaign actively for the Democratic ticket of Hubert Humphrey and Edmund Muskie in the presidential election. In part: "Let us forget our wounds, unite our forces, recapture the leadership of the Democratic Party, and commit it to policies of humanitarianism and peace." Historian/philosopher Will Durant (1885-1981) was a young teacher when he met Chaya Kaufman, later known as Ariel (1898-1981), a Russian Jewish immigrant and talented student. As a team, they became the most popular and among the most influential historians of the twentieth century. Their 11-volume Story of Civilization, published over forty years (1935-1975) extended from prehistory to the nineteenth century and was recognized for its fine writing as well as its ideas. Winners of the Pulitzer Prize and the Medal of Freedom, the Durant's produced such other influential works as An Invitation to Philosophy, Heroes of History and a dual autobiography. Fine condition.
