Senator Eugene McCarthy during the contentious Democratic primaries and
convention of 1968 to campaign actively for the Democratic ticket of Hubert
Humphrey and Edmund Muskie in the presidential election. In part: "Let
us forget our wounds, unite our forces, recapture the leadership of the
Democratic Party, and commit it to policies of humanitarianism and peace."
Historian/philosopher Will Durant (1885-1981) was a young teacher when he met
Chaya Kaufman, later known as Ariel (1898-1981), a Russian Jewish immigrant and
talented student. As a team, they became the most popular and among the most
influential historians of the twentieth century. Their 11-volume Story of
Civilization, published over forty years (1935-1975) extended from
prehistory to the nineteenth century and was recognized for its fine writing as
well as its ideas. Winners of the Pulitzer Prize and the Medal of
Freedom, the Durant's produced such other influential works as An
Invitation to Philosophy, Heroes of History and a dual autobiography.
