WILL DURANT
The historian acknowledges receipt of a letter
ALS: "Will Durant", 1p, 7¼x10¾. Augusta, Georgia, 1932 February 18. On letterhead of First Christian Church to "Dear Mr. Filene". In full: "Just received your letter of the 9th. Good and generous of you as usual. How and when shall I be able to return to you some of your fine hospitality? If I speak under your auspices I must outdo myself. Yours". At lower margin, Durant has written: "New address: 2 Henry St, Great Neck, N.Y." Historian/philosopher Will Durant (1885-1981) was a young teacher when he met Ariel (1898-1981), a Russian Jewish immigrant and talented student. As a team, they became the most popular and among the most influential historians of the twentieth century. Their 11-volume Story of Civilization, published over forty years (1935-1975) extended from prehistory to the nineteenth century, and was lauded for its fine writing as well as its ideas. Winners of the Pulitzer Prize and the Medal of Freedom, the Durants produced such other influential works as An Invitation to Philosophy, Heroes of History and a dual autobiography. Lightly creased. Staple holes at upper left. Three ¼-inch tears at right edge. Overall, fine condition.
