Joseph Durant, Jr.
Check signed: "W. J. Durant", 7x3. Los Angeles, California,

for $50. Entirely filled out by Durant. Endorsed on verso: "Mrs. Joseph

Durant (1885-1981) was a young teacher when he met Ariel (1898-1981), a
Russian Jewish immigrant and talented student. As a team, they became the
most popular and among the most influential historians of the twentieth
century. Their 11-volume Story of Civilization, published over forty
years (1935-1975) extended from prehistory to the nineteenth century, and was
lauded for its fine writing as well as its ideas. Winners of the Pulitzer
Prize and the Medal of Freedom, the Durants produced such other influential
works as An Invitation to Philosophy, Heroes of History and a dual
autobiography. This check was probably made out to a relative, but a family
biography is currently unavailable. Durant's father was Joseph Durant, his
mother Mary. Will and Ariel had a daughter, Ethel, and an adopted son, Louis.
Mrs. Joseph Durant, Jr. may have been a sister in law. Perforation marks.
