WILL ROGERS, SR
Small black and white (with brown hue) book photograph of Will Rogers, Sr.
Book Photograph signed: "Will Rogers". B/w with brown hue, 3½x6. American humorist Will Rogers (1879-1935) first made a name for himself as an expert roper and lasso twirler in Texas Jack's Wild West Circus in South America at the turn of the 20th century. Fame from his good-natured homespun humor first came when he initiated a witty political commentary in his Ziegfeld Follies act in 1915. Rogers later appeared in nearly 40 silent movies and early talkies. His folksy humor, which first appeared in print in weekly newspaper syndication in 1922, appeared in 350 dailies by 1926, the year he toured Europe as President Calvin "Silent Cal" Coolidge's Ambassador of Goodwill. Rogers also authored several books, including Rogerisms-the Cowboy Philosopher on Prohibition (1919). Rogers, who was killed in 1935 during a flight from Alaska to the Orient when his plane, piloted by aviator Wiley Post, crashed, was immortalized in the 1952 film biography The Story of Will Rogers, in which he was portrayed by his son, Will Rogers, Jr., who would also impersonate his father in the films Look for the Silver Lining (1949) and The Eddie Cantor Story (1953). Ink spread at the "rs" of Rogers. Slightly soiled. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 15½x24¾.
