Signed with fountain pen on the colophon page. Willa Cather (1873-1947) went from teaching English in her native Nebraska to writing for McClure's Magazine in New York, angering Christian Scientists with a serialized biography of Mary Baker Eddy (1907-1908). She published her first novel, Alexander's Bridge, in 1912. Cather won a Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours (1922). While some critics disparaged her for not being experimental enough in her writing, others, including H. L. Mencken, praised her for writing in plain language about ordinary people. Edges and corners worn. Spine is soiled and worn - missing some printing. Pages trimmed and bound unevenly. Signature page in fine condition.
