Signature: "Willem J. Kolff/1996", 5x3. Willem J. Kolff (1911-2009), born in a prominent Dutch family, began developing his revolutionary medical techniques while participating in the anti-German resistance during World War II. Moving to the US in 1950, Kolff became a medical pioneer in techniques of hemodialysis for kidney failure, and of artificial organs. He developed the first artificial kidney, and an improved heart-lung machine for use during cardiac surgery. As head of the University of Utah's Institute for Biomedical Engineering, he supported and inspired Robert Jarvik, who implanted the first artificial heart in 1982. A nominee for the Nobel Prize, Kolff received many other honors, including the Harvey Prize and the AMA Scientific Achievement Award. In 1990, Life magazine included him in its 100 Most Important Persons of the Twentieth Century. Corners slightly worn and creased. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Fine condition.
