WILLI SOUKOP
The Czech sculptor, who was a member of the British Royal Academy, sends letter and signature to an admirer
Autograph letter signed: "Willi Soukop" in blue ink. 1 page, 8x10. May 13, 1970. London, England. Addressed to a Mr. Davies. In full: "I have received your letter with your request for my signature which I will give you with pleasure. My home is more in England and in the London Telephone Directory it's the only Soukop spelled with an O. Of course in Cechoslakia [sic] it is a frequent name and so it is in Austria where a great number of Cechs live. Sometime ago I asked the Cechs Ambassador's wife whom I met at a party what Soukop means, if anything, and to my delight she told me the translation means something like craftsman. Being a sculptor I was delighted with this translation. With best wishes, yours sincerely". Willi Soukop (1907-1995) was the son of a Moravian (Czech) shoemaker, who disappeared after his horrific experiences during the First World War, forcing Soukop to being working in a factory at a very early age. He would attended evening classes at the arts and crafts school in Vienna, before being accepted into the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Soukop met and English woman in 1934 who invited him to England, where he lived in a Devon studio and taught at the Dartington Art School, the Blundell's School, and the Chelsea Art College. A member of the Royal Academy, he taught as a Master of Sculpture as well as exhibited at the Academy. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
