WILLIAM CAVENDISH (7th DUKE OF DEVONSHIRE)
Brief letter written during his long tenure as Chancellor of Cambridge University
Autograph Letter signed: "Devonshire", 4½x7 affixed to a 6x9½ sheet. Chatsworth, Chesterfield [England], 1883 May 12. On black-bordered mourning paper to "Mr. Noel Richardson", in full: "Sir, I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter and remain your obedient servant". Affixed to a sheet with brief printed biography. William Cavendish (1808-1891) was known as the Earl of Burlington until he became the 7th Duke of Devonshire in 1858. (The title passed from the 6th Duke, known as "the Bachelor Duke", to William Cavendish, husband of the former Duke's favorite niece, Blanche.) Although he served in the House of Commons and the House of Lords, the 7th Duke was primarily a scholar. He was Chancellor of the University of London (1836-1856) and of Cambridge University (1862-1891). He endowed Cambridge's world renowned physics lab, Cavendish Laboratory. Surface creases. Normal mailing folds. Faint stains on right margin. Irregularly cut. Otherwise, fine condition.
