WILLIAM A. GRAHAM
The Secretary of the Navy and Senator from North Carolina signs this letter from 1852
Manuscript letter signed: "Will. A. Graham" as Fillmore's Secretary of the Navy, 1p, 8x10. Navy Department, 1852 March 25. Telling J. Brugham, Esq., Hudson, New York, "it is not usual to grant leave of absence to recruits. If young Mr. Bartlett is a minor, evidence of the fact should be produced when his discharge will be authorized...." William A. Graham (1804-1875) became Fillmore's Secretary of the Navy on July 22, 1850, two weeks after President Taylor died. He served until July 22, 1852, four months after he wrote this letter. At the June 17-20, 1852 Whig Party Convention, General Winfield Scott was nominated for President and Graham was nominated for Vice President. Scott-Graham lost to the Democratic Pierce-King ticket on November 2nd. By 1856, conservative Whigs turned to the American (Know-Nothing) Party, southern Whigs became Democrats and most antislavery northern Whigs joined the new Republican Party. Lightly creased and soiled. Notes at upper edge, unknown hand. Overall, fine condition.
