your observations of the general policies and procedures we establish in our
business." A central figure in the nation's air transport industry for more
than four decades, William A. Patterson served as President (1934-1963)
and Chairman and CEO (1963) of United Airlines until his
retirement in 1966. Patterson is credited with the introduction of
instrument-controlled flights and female flight attendants to the industry.
He appeared on the cover of "Time" magazine, April 21, 1947, captioned:
