On United Air Lines letterhead to George Sanders, KWJJ Broadcasting Company, Portland, Oregon. In part: "In recognition of your contribution to air transportation through your extensive air travel, we welcome you as a member of United Air Lines' 100,000 Mile Club...With the amount of traveling you do, you are well qualified to give us the benefit of your observations of the general policies and procedures we establish in our business." A central figure in the nation's air transport industry for more than four decades, William A. Patterson served as President (1934-1963) and Chairman and CEO (1963) of United Airlines until his retirement in 1966. Patterson is credited with the introduction of instrument-controlled flights and female flight attendants to the industry. He appeared on the cover of "Time" magazine, April 21, 1947, captioned: "United's Patterson/Why be first?" Fine condition.
