Typed Letter signed: "W. S. Stanfill", 1 page, 8x10½, affixed
to an 8½ by 11 sheet. Affixed on verso are a Senate envelope bearing Stanfill's
stamped frank, and two short newspaper clippings reporting his appointment.
WILLIAM ABNER STANFILL (1892-1971), a Kentucky lawyer and
Republican, was appointed to fill an unexpired term in the US Senate when
Happy Chandler resigned his seat to become baseball commissioner. Stanfill
served for only one year (1945-1946) and did not seek election to a full
term. From the collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009) a fighter
pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II.
Ward went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc.,
transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Multiple
mailing folds. Lightly creased. Folds lightly effecting signature. Otherwise,
