WILLIAM B. DOWNEY
The Reverend who led prayer with the crew of the Enola Gay before they bombed
Hiroshima penned this handwritten letter and his signature
Autograph Letter Signed: “William B. Downey”. 6¼x9. One page. Dated November 5, 1984.
Letterhead from his office in Mount Dora, Florida. In Full: “Enclosed please find the two
signature cards signed as I hope you directed. I must confess I am at a loss to determine how you
knew I was in Europe (Ireland), but since you mentioned it, I spent the entire time in Ireland,
home of my people back in the 17th and 18th Century. It is indeed the grand country to which I
shall return. / I would sign your book 'Enola Gay' also, but as the hard copy is only print, I'm sure
you would not care to risk it in the mail. Hope the enclosed are ok”. Reverend William B.
Downey (1917-1994) served as a Chaplain in the United States armed forces. He prayed
with Enola Gay crew members before they departed to bomb Hiroshima, Japan, with the
atomic bomb. After WWII, he became a pastor at Fox Point Lutheran in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. He led services there from 1947 to 1968. Fine condition.
