On House of Commons stationery, he writes that he was "accidentally sent out at the division" and hence prevented from voting against the government.
Autograph Letter signed: "W Ballantine" as a Member of Parliament, 1 page, 4¾x7¼. No place, no date ("Thursday"). On House of Commons letterhead, in full: "Will you kindly state that I was accidentally sent out at the division on the 1st Charge and prevented voting against the government. Yours truly". William Henry Walter Ballantine (1847-1911), a member of Britain's Liberal Party, represented Coventry in the House of Commons (1887-1895), defeated in a bid for another term. A "division" is the British Parliamentary term for what the US Congress would call a roll call vote. Apparently Ballantine, a back bencher, wanted it known that he would not deliberately have missed a vote "against the government." That language suggests that this letter was written between 1886 and 1892, when Ballantine's Party was out of power, a minority in opposition to the Conservative Prime Minister, Lord Salisbury. William Henry Walter Ballantine should not be confused with the noted English barrister named William Ballantine (1812-1887). Normal mailing folds. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
