An American composer and pianist, William Bolcom was born (1938) in Seattle,
Washington. He studied composition at the University of Washington (at age 11)
and later received his masters at Stanford University and his DMA-he received
the 2eme Prix de Composition at the Paris Conservatoire. As a pianist, Balcom
has recorded numerous classical programs and some twenty albums in collaboration
with Jean Morris of primarily show tunes, and cabaret songs. As a composer, he
won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for composition of 12 New Etudes for
Piano, 3 Grammy Awards in 2006 for Songs of Innocence and of Experience
, a National Metal of Arts in 2006. He has composed 3 major
operas, eight symphonies, numerous piano rags, and four volumes of cabaret
songs. In 2007, VocalEssence sponsored a two-week festival in Minneapolis-St.
Paul, Minnesota honoring his music with more than 400 musicians performing his
works. Music Now Fest 2009 at Eastern Michigan University featured Bolcom
as a guest composer who personally led a discussion on "Musical Grass-Roots".
