WILLIAM BRENT As Recording Clerk, he signs a document by which Elexius Simms returns household goods used to collateralize a loan. Also signed by Simms, and by Justice of the Peace Nicholas Callan. Manuscript Document signed: "W. Brent" as Court Clerk, "Elexius Simms" twice, once with a mark for his seal, and "N. Callan, Jr" as Justice of the Peace twice, once with a mark for his seal. 3 pages, 8x13¼. Washington, D.C., 1845 June 19. Itemized bill of sale acknowledging that James Hall paid $200 for household goods which he had used in an 1842 contract with Elexius Simms. The document has been notarized by Callan. WILLIAM BRENT (1775-1848), from a distinguished Virginia family, was the longtime Clerk of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia. He had been a cavalry commander in the D.C. militia, rising to the rank of colonel. Brent had served as temporary secretary to Thomas Jefferson, but declined a permanent position. ELEXIUS SIMMS was a longtime resident of the District of Columbia. His name can be found on civil suits in the court records, and on a petition to Congress (1840) calling for a greater degree of home rule for the District. NICHOLAS CALLAN, JR. a D. C. Justice of the Peace and Notary Public, was also an officer of the local volunteer fire company and held other town offices. He is mentioned in early histories as one of D.C.'s prominent early Catholics. Multiple mailing folds. Toned at folds. Lightly creased. Multiple minor ink smudges.
