WILLIAM C. REDFIELD
Friendly personal letter from the Secretary of Commerce to the Clerk of the US House of Representatives, discussing a familiar post-Thanksgiving problem
Typed Letter signed: "William C. Redfield" as Secretary of Commerce, 1 page, 7¼x9. Washington, D.C., 1914 November 27. On official letterhead to Mr. South Trimble, Clerk of the House of Representatives, Washington. In full: "We have eaten that turkey, or rather we have twice eaten at that turkey and shall have to try it again. Now that I have had this practical experience with it the same problem about which I wrote you before arises fresh. If you are as good a fellow for a man as that turkey was for a turkey, then you are good indeed, and I think you are. Gratefully yours". William Cox Redfield (1858-1932) was the first Secretary of Commerce (1913-1919), after the Departments of Commerce and Labor were split at the outset of the Wilson administration. A New York businessman who represented that state for one term in Congress (1911-1913), Redfield had attended the breakaway Indianapolis convention of "Gold Democrats" who refused to support William Jennings Bryan in the 1896 Presidential election. Mailing fold through center. Lightly creased. Toned on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
