 Typescript signed: "William Styron", 1p, 8½x11. Headed: "To the Public". Excerpt from his 1967 novel, The Confessions of Nat Turner. The excerpt mentions the rebellion of slaves led by Nat Turner, the "great Bandit" who was captured by Benjamin Phipps. Styron, as narrator, has "ready access to him" and is "determined for the gratification of public curiosity to commit his statements to writing and publish them...." Author William Clark Styron (1925-2006) was awarded the 1968 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for The Confessions of Nat Turner, a first-person account of an 1831 slave rebellion. His other well known novel, Sophie's Choice, was published in 1979. Styron, who had published his first novel, Lie Down in Darkness, in 1951, was awarded the American National Medal of Arts by the National Endowment of the Arts in 1993. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
